Let’s be honest, 2020 was a complete gong show. Sure, there was some racing to be had, but the races were few and far between. Things are looking up for 2021 and the racing season is nearly upon us – whether you are looking to get out to some events, hang with fellow bike-loving peeps and plan to rock the party pace or you have been training intensely and are striving for a podium – Western and Central North Dakota has a great lineup of events for 2021! Get your calendar ready!
May 1st – Dirty Turtle Gravel Grinder
The Dirty Turtle Gravel Grinder is a multi-distance gravel race held in the Turtle Mountains of Bottineau County. The start/finish is located at the Carbury Dam Campground approximately 8 miles Northwest of Bottineau, ND. The race weaves in and out of the foothills though a lush, wooded area filled with lakes and wildlife. You will have three distances to choose from (24-mile, 45-mile, and 95-mile). Fully supported aid stations with drop bag options will be provided on course.
May 8th – 10th Anniversary Burleigh County Cup
A self-supported gravel road bicycle event throughout the challenging and scenic hills of Burleigh County, North Dakota just outside of Bismarck. There are two distances to choose from: The 35-mile Sippy Cup and the 75-mile Burleigh County Cup.
May 30th – Badlands Gravel Battle
The Badlands Gravel Battle grinds across approximately 120 miles and rolls over 10,500 feet of elevation gain on the fast and rugged red scoria roads that crosshatch the badlands of western North Dakota. 38-mile, 83-mile, and 122-mile loop options.
June 12th – Otter Creek MTB Race
The 2021 Otter Creek presented by 701 Cycle & Sport is an XC Mountain Bike Race that takes place at the beautiful Harmon Lake just north of Mandan, ND. NEW for 2021 will be cash prizes totaling $3000. The Overall Top 3 Men and Overall Top 3 Women finishers in the 55-mile Expert race will be awarded cold hard cash! With the addition of brand new singletrack at Harmon Lake, this race provides an experience for everyone as it follows the contours of the beautiful lake. The trail provides everything from canopy covered technical to wide-open, fast and flowy singletrack. This year's distances include: Beginner 15-miles, Sport 35-miles, and Expert 55-miles (3 laps).
June 18th-20th - Bike the Border
This is a 3-day fully supported hub-style bicycle tour around the Turtle Mountains beginning in Bottineau, ND and ending in Bottineau, ND each evening. Camping (with showers) is at Tommy Turtle Park.
June 19th-20th – Bad24HR
Log as many miles as you desire on the beautifully challenging Maah Daah Hey, Long X, and Sunset Trails that make up the BAD24HR badlands single track loop(s) racecourse located right out of the gate at the northernmost MDH trailhead. Make laps on the 11.5-mile and/or 2.4-mile loop.
June 26th – Kidder County Classic
The Kidder County Classic is a self-supported bike event on the gravel roads and hills north of Robinson, North Dakota. The rolling prairie landscape unique to North Dakota and riding it by bike is challenging and fun. Sign-in and post-race festivities will be held at Hanson's Bar, the oldest and coolest bar in North Dakota. The KCC is free event that offers a 22-mile and 70-mile distance.
July 10th – BisMan Triathlon
A sprint distance triathlon (500-meter Swim/13-mile Bike/3.1-mile Run) with a lot of heart, a ton of fun, and friendly competition held at McDowell Dam outside of Bismarck, ND.
July 18th – NODAK 100
5th Annual NODAK 100 Minot area century ride sponsored by Val’s Cyclery to benefit the Taube Museum of Art, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
August 7th – MDH100
Come race 100, 75, 50, 25, or 13 miles of world famous Maah Daah Hey SINGLETRACK on your mountain bike! The Maah Daah Hey 100 is the raddest race in the baddest place, but it is so much more than that... it is an achievement, it is something legendary, riding it in one day is something that very few mountain bikers can say they have done.
August 21st – Thunderhawk Wide Open
The Thunderhawk Wide Open is the Grand River area's very own gravel bicycle race. Travel across gravel roads, two track prairie trails and ford the Cedar River. Take in breathtaking wide-open vistas while challenging yourself on either the 25-, 50- or 115-mile route.
September 18th – The Lawton Loop
A gravel ride in Lawton, ND with a 75-mile and a 25-mile course option. Post-race meal included with entry and free camping available. ALL rider levels welcome!
September 18th – MDH Buck-Fifty
This legendary race begins at the southernmost point of the world-famous Maah Daah Hey Trail, the Burning Coal Vein Campground Trailhead. Racers will travel north on the raw & rugged Badlands single-track, with the goal of reaching the northernmost trailhead at CCC Campground, over 150 miles away.
October 2nd – The AlKemist
Starting at Huff Hills Ski Area south of Mandan, ND. Riders will climb their way out of the Missouri river valley onto the bluffs of Morton County. The 25-mile and 50-mile courses will roll through some of the best gravel central ND has to offer.
