Lyons-Heart Gravel Classic 2025 Recap

Lyons-Heart Gravel Classic 2025 Recap

The second annual Lyons-Heart Gravel Classic took place on Saturday, July 12, 2025, bringing nearly 100 riders to Mandan, North Dakota, for a day of big climbs and wide-open gravel. Participants could choose from a 35-mile race, a 65-mile race, or the premier 100-mile event—each one going through the scenic Heart River Valley.

Riders tackled a course full of fast descents, sweet views, and sharp climbs through the area known as "The Lyon’s Den," proving that North Dakota’s gravel is anything but flat. Racers were supported by on-course aid stations, and every finisher earned a commemorative patch.

With a $7,000 prize purse and equal payouts for men and women, the stakes were high. In the 100-mile race, Chase Wark claimed the men’s overall win, while Morgan Chaffin led the women’s field.

All About the Racers

The energy around the event was upbeat, welcoming, and full of encouragement. Riders came from nine different states, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina, California, and Texas. Many had discovered North Dakota’s gravel during previous travels and returned specifically to ride these roads again—this time as part of something bigger.

On course, it was all about camaraderie. Riders pushed each other up the hills, rode together on the flats, and soaked in the scenery side by side. When asked what stood out the most, participants mentioned the quality of the gravel, the scenery of the route, and how rewarding the climbs were

Vendors and Expo

Back at the finish line in downtown Mandan, the celebration kicked into full gear. Racers and spectators were treated to live music, a spread of local food trucks, and craft brews from area breweries. The Race Expo and vendor village featured arts and crafts, Sram reps, and even mobile saunas and ice baths to help riders recover.

Each registrant received a meal and drink ticket to enjoy the festivities, and awards were handed out to top finishers by overall placement and age group. It was a perfect way to wind down after a day on the gravel—and a reminder that this race isn’t just about miles, but about the community it brings together.
