Otter Creek Mountain Bike Race Recap
There’s something pretty special about waking up on race day with the lake in view and bikes buzzing to life across the campground. That was the atmosphere at this year’s Otter Creek Mountain Bike Race & Trail Run, an event that felt less like a competition and more like a celebration of trail riding, community, and the fun of racing.
From the moment we rolled up to Harmon Lake, it was clear this wasn’t just another race - it was the race. Riders from across North Dakota and those representing various other states lined up to take on the trail, which hugged the lake with a perfect mix of fast and flowy singletrack, covered technical sections, and wide-open rollers. Some were there to podiums while others came to finish strong and soak up the experience.
The Trail, the Cheers, the Camaraderie
With distances for every level, from the 13-mile Beginner route to the grueling 55-mile Expert course, there was room for every kind of rider. And no matter the pace, the spirit out on the trail was electric. Aid stations were stocked and staffed with volunteers who handed out water, snacks (bacon!), and encouragement like it was race fuel. It didn’t matter what state your plate was from: out here, everyone belonged.
Cash Prizes and Community
Sure, the $4,200 in cash prizes added some heat to the top of the field, but the race never lost its laid-back heart. Finishers were covered in dirt and sweat, but also high fiving, holding up their commemorative patches, and grabbing a beer or ice-cream post-race.
Post-Race
As the last riders came in, the party kicked off. Local food trucks fired up everything from tacos to burgers to sandwiches. There was ice cream for the kids (and adults), craft brews from local favorites, and strong coffee for those of us who raced and cheered. Oakley and Orbea reps were on-site with product and demo bikes, cruising, chatting, and letting people test ride the latest gear. It was the kind of post-race scene you don’t want to leave: people stretched out in camp chairs, bikes leaning against trees, and stories flying.
One of the Good Ones
The Otter Creek MTB Race wasn’t just well-organized—it was well-loved. From the Friday packet pickup at 701 Cycle and Sport to the last cheers on the finish line, every moment felt like something the local cycling community poured their heart into. It was competitive without being cutthroat. Inclusive, energetic, and just fun.
This year, the cap was set at 200 participants, and if you were lucky enough to be one of them, you know exactly why this race is a favorite. We can’t wait for next year.
To the riders, volunteers, vendors, and organizers: thank you!
