Tubeless Bike Setups: The Pros and the Cons

Tubeless Bike Setups: The Pros and the Cons

Tubeless setups are becoming more popular among riders looking to reduce flats and improve performance. But what exactly does it mean to go tubeless and is it the right choice for you? Here's a breakdown of the basics, pros and cons, and what to keep in mind.

What Is a Tubeless Setup?

A tubeless bike setup removes the inner tube inside the tire and replaces it with liquid sealant. This sealant coats the inside of the tire and helps plug small punctures as they happen. To run tubeless, you need tubeless-ready tires and wheels. These are designed to create a secure, airtight seal between the tire and rim.

Pros of Going Tubeless

  • Fewer flats: The sealant can quickly close small punctures before they become a problem.

  • Lower tire pressure: Without a tube, you don’t need to worry about pinch flats. Lower pressure improves traction and creates a smoother ride, especially on rough surfaces.

  • Better ride feel: With one less layer of rubber, the connection between you and the trail feels more direct.

  • Lighter weight: Tubeless setups reduce rotational weight, which helps with acceleration and overall efficiency.

Cons of Tubeless

  • More frequent air checks: Tubeless tires naturally lose air a little faster than tubed setups, so you’ll want to check your pressure more often.

  • Sealant maintenance: The sealant inside your tires needs to be refilled about twice a year. It’s a small step, but important to keep your setup working properly.

What Else Should You Know?

  • Carry a tubeless plug: While sealant works for small holes, a larger puncture might need a tubeless plug. Keep one in your flat kit if you're heading out for a long ride or race.

  • MTB setups are shifting: More mountain bikes now come tubeless-ready, making the switch easier than ever.

Switching to tubeless can improve ride quality, reduce flats, and save weight—especially for off-road and gravel riders. If you're unsure whether your wheels and tires are compatible or want help with setup, stop
